The Effect of Music on Creativity

Creativity is a spectrum of different disciplines and talents formed to create something extraordinary. It allows an individual to truly express themselves in their own personalized way but, did you know certain things drive creativity?

Music is one of the biggest drivers of creativity. Not only does it release feel good hormones such as Dopamine, this hormone plays a special role in the creative process by allowing our brain to think of new ideas. It also helps with focus, long-term memory and concentration, all which simultaneously help with creativity.

Famously known as the ‘Mozart Effect’, this was a study from the 90s which showed that listening to pieces of music from Mozart boosted scores on one part of an IQ test. Therefore, supporting the idea that listening to music (in this instance, classical) does in fact boost concentration.

Furthermore, a study carried out in 2017 in the journal PLOS ONE found that listening to music which was upbeat and happy, allowed many people to perform better on what can be described as needing ‘divergent’ thinking. This is “making unexpected combinations, recognizing links among remote associates, or transforming information into unexpected forms” as defined by the authors of the journal.

Additionally, happy music leads to a better mood which essentially causes a broader mindset, and more creativity.
